She was a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient for the Kiwanis club for outstanding academic achievement and community service. She collects toys and other items that she donates to children in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Children’s Hospital. Kelsey volunteers as a counselor at a ski camp for other kids with cancer. She was captain of the Glenwood Springs High School soccer team. Kelsey will attend Colorado State University and major in social work. She plans on working at a hospital or clinic where she can help children and their families through “some of their darkest hours” going through a life threatening illness.
Chelsey Heffron – Graduated from Ponderosa High School in Parker, CO. Her cancer treatment included five hours of chemotherapy infusion every two weeks for one year. Prior to her illness, she played on the Ponderosa Women’s Varsity Volleyball team and was team captain. She now volunteers coaching volleyball for youth girls in the Parker community. She is unable to play because she had her shoulder replaced to remove a tumor. Chelsey will be attending Colorado State University where she will major in biomedical sciences and become a physician’s assistant. To quote Chelsey - “I have had first hand experience fighting for my life with cancer and I would like to be there for others when they are in the battle also. I now know how important it is to have other help you through difficult situations and in return I want to bet there for others to help them through their difficult circumstances.
Mallory Mathews – Graduated from Silver Creek High School in Longmont, CO. She is a survivor of osteosarcoma, bone cancer in her left tibia and lungs. She had several major surgeries to remove the malignant tumors, had lung surgery and a total knee replacement to salvage her leg from amputation. To quote Mallory – “Most students’ sophomore year in high school is a fun carefree time, except maybe for the occasional street of homework, or losing Friday night’s football game. Mine, however was spent in a gray sterile room at Children’s Hospital in Denver. For several weeks or several months at a time I would spend my days confined in one of the tiny dismal rooms that had become a second home to me.” Mallory works as a waitress and occasionally returns to Children’s Hospital to lend moral support to kids undergoing treatment. Mallory will attend Colorado State University and plans on becoming a dentist.
Megan Brown – Graduated from Big Sandy High School in Big Sandy, MT. She is a survivor of rhabdomyosarcoma cancer. To quote Megan – “A career in nursing will allow me to give back to others the compassion and care that was given to me during my illness. Megan was active in 4-H Clubs, volleyball, cheerleading, and tennis and was a Montana Girls State Delegate. She was senior class president and president of her 4-H club.
Danesha McCoy – Graduated from Deer Valley High School in Antioch, CA. She will be attending the University of California, Berkeley, CA and majoring in Business and Japanese.
